"The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst
Synopsis: Doodle was born premature and his whole life was dictated by low standards. Doodle's brother, Brother, wants Doodle to do things like all the other kids, but Doodle is fragile and should be treated as so. Brother teaches Doodle to walk and decides he wants Doodle to do even more. However, during a bad storm, Brother leaves Doodle behind as he runs. Doodle calls out "Don't leave me Brother!" but Brother continues to run. When Brother realizes Doodle is no longer behind him he stops and waits. But it is too late. Doodle is found dead under a bush in very much the same manner as the Scarlet Ibis was found dead under the bleeding tree.
